1/22/96 Dear COARE Investigator; The Data Processing Center (DPC)/Data Archive and Distribution Center (DADC) for COARE Surface Meteorological Data at Florida State University (COARE-MET) has completed a first-level quality-control check of all (submitted) surface meteorology data recorded during the TOGA COARE IOP (exceptions noted below). We are making these quality-controlled data available to the COARE community to facilitate additional scientific research. Note; we anticipate completing our final quality checks by June 1996 after which time there will be a final release of COARE surface meteorology data. As of January 1, 1996 we have processed & reviewed over one million records of surface meteorology data recorded during the IOP. Over 10 million individual observations were checked by automated and interactive quality-control techniques. The results are included in this data archive. DATASETS INCLUDED IN THIS ARCHIVE --------------------------------- The datasets included in this archive (see list below) include data submitted from all GTS land stations, research vessels, special ISS surface met stations, and drifting buoys. It does NOT include data from: specialized land stations (C-MAN(7), PSS(21)), TOGA TAO buoys, normal volunteer observing ships, & missing COARE data sets (~ 4-5 platforms). We will have the CMAN data and probably the PSS data ready in February; TOGA TAO data can be obtained from PMEL. Volunteer observing ship data will not be quality-controlled by us (although we have the data available on our FTP site). We have also made a special time-sort of these data for reanalysis efforts - if interested, please feel free to download the appropriate file(s) from our FTP site (coaremet.fsu.edu) ORGANIZATION OF DATA ARCHIVES ---------------------------- The COAREMET quality-controlled surface meteorology data files are combined into a single tar archive file. There are two archives, identical in data content, but different with regards to data format: TAR archive where all data files in ascii format: coareasciiL1.tar.gz (15MB) TAR archive where all data files in netCDF format: coarenetcdfL1.tar.gz (11MB) Both archives are compressed with gnu-zip which means you will need gunzip to uncompress them. gunzip can be obtained from ftp.ai.gnu.mit.edu. Alternatively, on-the-fly decompression can be achieved using directions given when first logging on to our FTP server (WARNING: this means acquiring the data archive in *uncompressed* form [~60 MB], i.e. takes much longer to transfer): Both archives also contain all quality-control reports (ascii format) and complete documentation on reading the various files. After uncompression and un-tar'ing, the directory structure will appear as that of the COAREMET anonymous FTP site: buoy - directory of buoy data and reports docs - directory of documents describing the data, flags, and reports land - directory of land station data and reports rv - directory of research vessel data and reports CONTACT INFORMATION -------------------- We hope these data archives are useful.
