ABSTRACT

HYCOM has been used in the study of the ocean surrounding the Hawaiian Islands on topics ranging from physical processes such as mesoscale eddy formation mechanisms to biological behaviour such as cetacean habitat. I will present findings from some of the studies, with an emphasis on the role that HYCOM and HYCOM output played in these studies. In particular, I will discuss how experiments with a regional implementation of HYCOM have enabled identification of primary and secondary generation mechanisms of mesoscale eddies in the area west of the island of Hawaii.
