ABSTRACT

The Hycom model is being integrated in a regional operational forecast system focused on the West-Iberian Margin, from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Bay of Biscay. This work is being carried out by the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute (IHPT, Portuguese Navy) in cooperation with the French Navy's Hydrographic Office (SHOM). The system runs daily at IHPT, with a spatial resolution of 1 nautical mile and 32 vertical levels. Model results are controlled and validated by real time in situ observations, recorded by the IHPT Ocean Monitoring Network (Multiparametric ocean buoys, HF radar and tide gauges). This operational system is complemented by Meteorological and Sea-state forecasts, in order to support the Portuguese Naval Force and Maritime Authority in their missions. We will present the actual status of the system, the operational control scheme and some derived products.
