Oceanography research at COAPS is aimed at developing ocean prediction capability and gaining a better understanding of ocean physical processes and their influences on marine ecosystems. Research projects range from short time scales associated with coastal processes to decadal time scales associated with basin-wide processes. Topics of particular interest include continental shelf dynamics, interaction between shelf circulation and the deep ocean, fluxes between the ocean and atmosphere, validation numerical model solutions with available observations, and developing assimilation techniques to be used in numerical models. In addition to numerical modeling studies, scientists are actively involved in projects using in situ and satellite observations of the ocean.
