A technique has been developed to calculate surface stresses directly from NSCAT observations (rather than indirectly from NSCAT winds). These stresses have been calculated and averaged over each month of NSCAT observations. The onset of El Nino can be seen in the last few months. Winds in the around Northern Australia and in the Western Equatorial Pacific turn from westward to eastward. Also note the large stresses over the warm currents to the East of land masses.
