Overarching Challenge:
The workshop will combine invited and submitted presentations, and posters, to provide focused discussions on selected areas related to improving climate outlooks, climate monitoring, and application of climate forecasts and information. The outcome of this yearŐs workshop will include an assessment of present operational prediction capabilities, identifying opportunities for advances in climate predictions, and a review of applications and decision making processes in the southeast U.S. The workshop will provide enhanced opportunities for participants to exchange information, ideas, and opinions through participation in discussions and thematic review talks.
The workshop will be organized around special sessions focusing on:
- Next generation climate reanalysis and reforecasting at the NCEP
- Application of CPC climate outlooks in the southeast US
- Defining climate extremes
- Stratospheric/tropospheric connections and prospects for improving intra-seasonal predictions
- Physical basis for developing a forecast capability for weeks 3 & 4
- Prospects for improving precipitation/drought forecasts for different time-scales
- Scientific/practical results from North American Monsoon Experiment (NAME)
- Current state of ENSO predictions, predictability limits, and theoretical understanding of ENSO
