ABSTRACT

In the frame of the European MyOcean project (www.myocean.eu.org), NERSC is preparing a newer version of the TOPAZ system entitled TOPAZ4 in order to process a 20-years reanalysis. TOPAZ is a data assimilative system using the Enemble Kalman Filter (EnKF), which covers the North Atlantic and the Arctic basins with a resolution of about 11-16 km. The model has been upgraded to the newest 2.2.18 HYCOM version, with additional features in the NERSC multi-category ice model, and river run-off based on a hydrological model (TRIP). Other efforts focus on the assimilation, with the use of the Asynchronous-EnKF capable of making an optimal use of satellite track data, and in assimilating new data, e.g. Ferry-box data, high-resolution SST, sea ice drift, T-S profiles, ice thickness … Finally ongoing efforts are directed towards the assimilation of ocean color data in the coupled HYCOM-NORWECOM model.
