ABSTRACT
Given an understanding of Gulf Stream dynamics, that is support by a wide range of observational evidence in the upper and abyssal ocean, we can evaluate Gulf Stream simulations dynamically. This approach allows us to identify relationships between flaws in the simulations and flaws in the dynamics. It is a more powerful approach than the traditional focus on improving parameterizations of subgrid-scale processes and on parameter tuning. Results from 1/12º MICOM, 1/12º and 1/25º HYCOM, and 1/10º POP simulations are used in the evaluation.
