ABSTRACT

The performance of four sequential data assimilation methods developed for HYCOM is assessed in a twin experiment framework. The methods included are multi-variate Optimal Interpolation, Ensemble Optimal Interpolation, a Reduced Order version of the SEEK filter and the Reduced Order Information Filter. Altimeter and Sea Surface Temperature data sampled from a 1/12 HYCOM configured for the Gulf of Mexico is assimilated into the same model started from a different initial state. Results from several sensitivity experiments to assess the performance of these methods to different parameter choices and setups are presented. In general, all schemes are shown to enhance the consistency between the truth and assimilative runs.
