My primary research interests include natural and anthropogenic climate changes, the role of the ocean in the climate system and climate system modeling. Currently, I am developing and evaluating a new version of NCAR Community Climate System Model (CCSM) with the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) as the oceanic model. The model performance will be compared to that of the standard CCSM/POP. After the CCSM/HYCOM is validated, it will be applied to various climate issues such as the estimate of climate sensitivity/transient climate response, impact of the melting of the Greenland ice sheet, dynamical behavior and future evolution of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) etc. A long-term goal is to make CCSM/HYCOM available for the next IPCC integrations (AR5). I previously worked on the CMIP coordinated experiments ("water-hosing" and "partially-coupled" experiments) and conducted studies on global climate change and the Atlantic MOC.
