Swaths of stresses are calculated directly from scatterometer backscatter, rather than indirectly through scatterometer winds. The NSCAT project's 25km resolution swath data sets (L1.7) are used to calculate kinematic stress magnitudes (25 km resolution). Directions are assumed to be equal to the scatterometer wind directions. Fields in the data set are kinematic stress magnitude, stress direction, time, latitude, and longitude. The data sets are also resorted from the original orbit by orbit organization, to daily observations. The data set should be considered research quality. A paper describing the technique for calculating the kinematic stresses (Weissman and Graber, 1999) is in press.
NetCDF libraries are required to access the data, and can be obtained from UNIDATA.
