QSCAT Animation Playing Suggestions
MPEG: All the animations are best viewed at about 6-10 frames per second, but since the MPEG format only supports "video" rates (24fps, 30 fps, etc.), they will play back much too fast on a sufficiently powerful machine. Therefore, it is up to the player program to provide frame-rate control.
- UNIX: The original Berkeley MPEG player should play all these MPEGs correctly. It runs under nearly all UNIX variants (including Linux) and it supports adjustable frame rate control.
- Windows: The default Windows Media Player may not be able to play these MPEGs at all due to their "non-standard" sizes. The newest version should play them, but it may exhibit occasional graphical glitches and it doesn't provide frame-rate control. The other option is Apple's Quicktime player, but many of the same problems with Windows Media Player are likely occur with Quicktime.
- Macintosh: Apple's QuickTime player does have MPEG support, however, there is no frame-rate control. It also seems to play these MPEGs with an inconsistent frame rate. An alternative is a program called Sparkle which does provide frame-rate control. However, it too seems to play these MPEGs with a slightly inconsistent frame rate.
