RSV Nuyina

SAMOS Welcomes the RSV Nuyina

We are excited to welcome the Australian Antarctic Program’s (AAP) new research icebreaker RSV Nuyina to the SAMOS initiative’s active recruitment roster. From the AAP website: “Nuyina, pronounced noy-yee-nah, means ‘southern lights’ in palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines”. The Nuyina’s contribution of weather and ocean observations to the SAMOS initiative is made possible via a collaboration between the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the Australian Integrated Marine Observing System, and the Marine Data Center (MDC) at Florida State University. SAMOS distribution of Nuyina’s 1-minute interval quality-controlled marine observations, provided by the Australian Antarctic Data Center, begins with the Nuyina’s data collected on 22 April 2024. The Nuyina replaced the venerable Aurora Australis, which contributed to the SAMOS initiative from January 2008 – March 2020. With expanded capabilities from the Nuyina, we look forward to even more high-quality data collection from around the remote and under-sampled Southern Ocean. Support to manage the SAMOS observations from the Nuyina at the MDC is provided by NOAA’s Global Ocean Monitoring and Observation program . We are excited to continue the collaboration between NOAA, the MDC, and our Australian partners!
