"Science is built up with facts, as a house is with stones. But a collection of facts is no more a science than a heap of stones is a house."

-- Henry Poincaré, Science and Hypothesis

My primary research interests are atmospheric and climate dynamics, especially in searching for physically and logically consistent theories of the variability and change of the Earth's climate system, ranging from synoptic scale tropical waves to the Earth's orbital change timescales. While my research focuses have been shifting time to time and expanding continuously, one characteristic of my research that has not changed at all is my stern pursue of physical and mathematical logics starting from first principles, regardless of whether I am studying an atmospheric/climatic phenomenon or am developing data analysis methods.

My current research topics encompass many areas of atmospheric/climatic science and interdisciplinary studies:

  1. Tropical atmospheric dynamics, with focuses on the fundamental dynamics of the interaction between tropical heating and tropical waves/circulations;
  2. ENSO dynamics
  3. Global climate variability and change;
  4. Climate variability and change in alternative reference frame;
  5. Development of adaptive and local data analysis method; and
  6. Applications of adaptive and local data analysis method to atmospheric/climatic phenomena and to other scientific, engineering, and medical sciences.
